Beginning to Play Soccer? Here's what You Need.
Recreational soccer needs no special equipment - only feet and some free space in which to kick a ball around! But to play a game of organised soccer there are several essential items of equipment which every player must have - and every game requires.
Soccer Balls.
No kidding - you can't play the game without one! FIFA, the World Federation, specifies the regulation size and weight of balls to be used in matches organised under the official rules - but in youth and minor leagues - local rules often apply. Soccer balls come in three sizes : 3, 4, 5 - and are made from different types of material. Before you buy - check with your local league administrators or soccer coach and find out which is the correct size of ball for your age group.
Soccer Cleats /Boots.
Soccer Cleats are called Boots in Britain and are a soccer player's most important piece of equipment. Make sure they are a comfortable fit - and remember to wear the type of stockings you will be playing in when you are trying them on for size! Soccer cleats come in many shapes and forms - and are made for different weather conditions and playing surfaces. Choose the type which best adapts to your needs.
Shin Guards.
Shin Guards offer excellent protection from leg injuries and players in any game of organized soccer are required to wear them. There are many different styles from which to choose - attacking players often favor light-weight guards which don't restrict their mobility - while defenders may choose tougher duty guards to protect them in the tackles. Choose shin guards which are designed for your playing position and style of play.
Soccer Shirts.
There is no need to purchase expensive regulation or replica soccer shirts - teams can play in differently colored Tee- shirts, or be distinguished by wearing colored armbands. - But every budding soccer star and every trophy hunting team has to have - the shirt! So shop around. Before you buy, check prices in your local sports store - and look at online offers.
Gloves for Goal-Keepers.
It is not obligatory - but Goal-Keepers should wear gloves. Not only do they provide the player with a better grip on the ball, they also cushion and protect fingers, palms and joints from injury. The selection of suitable gloves is a matter of personal preference.
Goals.
Games of organised soccer require regulation soccer goals - and FIFA, sets out the size requirements for goal post heights and sizes in The Laws of the Game. Many local and youth leagues use varying sizes of soccer goals, constructed to reflect the ages of players and playing field type. Purchase the type best suited to your requirements.
Corner flags and posts, colored training cones, coaching dvd's and videos, training vests, player's stat sheets etc. can all be purchased as club finances or needs demand but essentially, that's it!
